Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam have to wade through the competition until the end of the year without the attacker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson who suffered fractured ankle injury.

The 21-year-old player suffered the injury when Ajax lost 1-0 to host Groningen last weekend. Sigthorsson initially expected only to be absent from the green field for two to three weeks only.

However, after further examination, the injury suffered by Sigthorsson was more severe than previously thought. Players from Iceland had to be absent until the end of 2011.

Sigthorsson actually recruited Ajax in the transfer market last summer from AZ Alkmaar and instantly become a key player. Sigthorsson has scored five goals in eight appearances in the Eredivisie this season.

Sigthorsson injury a blow for Ajax coach Frank De Boer because today they were slumped in the fourth position of the Eredivisie standings.
